The “Heads Up” Barbershop Cancer Awareness Program is a targeted education and outreach program for African-American men, which emphasizes prevention, early detection and treatment of cancer, and other health disparities plaguing this population. “Heads Up” is a barbershop health education program coordinated by Montgomery County Cancer Crusade in partnership with local barbers, hopsitals, and community based organnizations to promote healthy lifestyles. The program will utilize barbers serving the African American communities as “health ambassadors” to provide health education and awareness to their clientele.
The program goals are to increase the knowledge and awareness of oral, prostate and colorectal cancer and other health disparities, including tobacco use prevention. Presentations, print information, and site appropriate health screenings will be provided and disseminated at local barber shops to educate men and women about the risks, prevention, symptoms of cancer, and other health related diseases. The aim is to promote informed choices about healthcare, screening, treatment, risk reduction, lifestyle behaviors changes, and access to screening.
